Performers ask, What affects you?
by Anthony Glassman
Cleveland "The pieces are really about what's important to our community, what touches us deeply," says Maura Haas, executive director of Wild Plum Productions of their current show, Touched: Bodies of Work.
A collection of one-act plays, poetry and songs by a diverse array of artists, the evening starts off with a queer take on Romeo and Juliet featuring the entire cast.
Other pieces include Linda Eisenstein's Marla's Devotion, featuring Denise Astorino and Elizabeth R. Wood, a comedy about the difficulty making changes in a relationship.
Dan Kilbane, Brad Speck, Shelby Scanlon and Ken Roderick Nicholson appear in Eisenstein's A Rustle of Wings, in which Kilbane plays a dark angel desired by an average bar-goer.
Wood also performs a reading of Miriam Axel-Lute's poem 100% Queer, about the difficulty in being bisexual, a gray person in a black-and-white world.
Haas herself has a piece in the program, Beating Flame, which is performed by Denise
Astorino. Beating Flame talks about grabbing life when love sinks its claws in.
The evening also features selections from The Sissy Show, a transgender musical and revue, performed by co-creator Kathy Harvey.
Touched: Bodies of Work will be performed on Thursdays at 7:30 pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm until November 28 in Cleveland Public Theater's James Levin Theater, upstairs at 6415 Detroit Ave. Tickets are $10-$15, and can be purchased by calling 216-631-2727.
Wild Plum Productions is also putting on an art show to go along with the performances. The opening reception of the art show, which features works by Kris Barnes, Liz Bowman, Judy Pezdir, Toni Federrio and Shahin Afnan, is on Friday, November 26 at 7 pm at the Cleveland Lesbian-Gay Center, 6600 Detroit Ave.
